History

Located in the middle of the sports city Patiala, the Prof. G.S. Govt. College of Physical Education, to be hereinafter referred to as PGSGCPE, is spread over 25 acres of land and governed by State Government of Punjab (Department of Education). It was established at Lahore (Pakistan) in 1940, after partition it was shifted to Shimla (Taradevi) then in October 1952 to Ropar and finally in 1958 to Patiala. One of the government funded colleges, it is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala. Mission of the college is “Happy childhood, virile youth and capable citizen” also aim to produce competent and qualified teachers of physical education and educational empowerment to sports person. The college, with a view to have academic and sports base for Physical Education professionals, is offering four different courses in physical education. . The Govt. college Patiala is the first institution to start M.P.Ed. in India in 1963. College restarted the C.P.Ed. ( two year course ) in 2006 with an intake of 50 students on self finance basis, with the recognition of NCTE. The present strength of college is 338. The college is under 2f and 12B clause of the UGC act 1956 and the recognition by NCTE was not necessary as the college was established before the enactment of the NCTE Act 1993 (G.O. No.13/330/04-6E1/11190 dated 19-05-05) The college is permanently affiliated to the Punjabi University. The college campus is spread over 25 acres. The administrative block houses Principal’s office, administrative office, teaching staff room, class rooms, library and toilet facilities. The institution has separate hostels for boys and girls. The college has a master plan which ensures sufficient space for future expansions.The Govt. College of Physical Education, Patiala is considered is a premier institution of the state and the students get admitted to the college are meritorious and successfully complete the course. The pass percentage is almost 100 per cent and the dropout rate is negligible. The admission is through a common entrance test. About 15% of the seats are reserved for students from other states. About 95% students of the college participate in Inter Collegiate Competitions, 70% in Inter University Tournaments, 15% in National Competitions and 5% in International Competitions.
